Community Leader Wins National Retailer’s Contest

Verna Brown wins and chooses The Children’s Table to receive a $5,000 donation from Midnight Velvet.

For Immediate Release: Fatima Knapp nominated Verna Brown, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Children’s Table in Bronson, Florida, for the Midnight Velvet Giving Fabulous Charity Contest. Knapp wrote in her nomination, “It is her {Verna’s} belief that no man, woman or child should be denied the nutrition needed for a healthy and productive life. Without the heart of Verna helping to start this organization, a lot of families would have gone hungry. She is a true hero.”

Brown founded The Children’s Table in 1996 to provide families with fresh produce gleaned from fields and groves. What started as helping one family at a time has grown into an organization that has distributed over 23 million pounds of food in 53 counties in Florida. Each week approximately 1,000 families are provided food though the network of food pantries that receive supplies from The Children’s Table.

Midnight Velvet’s Giving Fabulous Contest launched in January 2012 as a means to give back to customers after being in business for 25 years. Entries were judged based on demonstrated impact, community need, innovation & authenticity. There were three winners chosen in April and each will receive a $5,000 donation to the charity of their choice from two Midnight Velvet representatives who are personally delivering the checks in June. They will be coming to Florida to see Brown on Monday, June 18th.

“We developed this new contest to celebrate and recognize people who inspire change and uplift their communities,” says Ann Bush, Midnight Velvet President. “For 25 years, we have been celebrating beauty inside and out. We wanted to give back to our customers and the communities they are involved in.”

The other two winners are Victor Junious from Imago Dei Ministries in Chicago, IL and Matthew Okebiyi from African American Planning Commission, Inc. in Brooklyn, New York.
